The mission of SOS Ministries is to "Rescue, Restore, and Release" those we serve from drug and gang infested environments where abuse, poverty, and violence are a way of life. J.J. Ramirez, ex-drug dealer and former addict, began SOS in 1993 to combat the escalating gang tensions prevalent in Brazos Valley. During 1993, the area experienced over fifty gang related shootings, two of which resulted in death. J.J. Ramirez took action by returning to the same drug and gang infested streets where he grew up to share the message of Hope that freed him from years of addiction. In the following year, the number of gang related shootings in our community plummeted by a staggering 88%.
Since then, the vision and influence of SOS Ministries has greatly expanded, and what began as an effort to primarily reach gang members has grown into a ministry that reaches every area of our city and every member of the family, from child to grandparent. SOS is a nearly 24/7 Ministry Center located on 20 acres near Downtown Bryan, in the heart of the neighborhoods we serve. With the help of 300 volunteers and 75 partner organizations, SOS invests in the daily lives of over 600 children, teens, women, and men through high-impact discipleship programs, vocational training, life skills education, and outreaches across at-risk neighborhoods across the Brazos Valley.
